Does anyone else have to put up with constant jokes about pet chickens becoming dinner, or miming wringing necks, etc, from so-called ‘friends’? I’m a first time chicken owner and it’s really starting to p*ss me off... does this just come with the territory?

One member of my family kept threatening for over a year to butcher and eat my annoying little Old English Game bantam rooster, and I always ignored him (he was teasing, he would never actually harm them). Then one day I found that OEGB roo refusing to let my 8-year-old hen eat, and I got real MAD! I ran inside and told the family member he could butcher that meal little rooster, and he just laughed and said, "no thanks, there's not enough meat on him." :plbb

But yeah, it comes with the territory. You will get teased. Come up with a good come-back, or just ignore them. Or come rant about it on here! :highfive:

I'm just started to upgrade and am hoping to get meat chickens this year! But I always have and always will have pets that are simply not for meat!

I’d like to explore your last sentence a bit further... And I think this forum/website is the only place where I can do it safely! You see, I ADORE my pet teenage chickens. I love them so much, and that’s why I got so upset and frustrated today when yet another remark about them being dinner was made. YET I happily eat chicken. Sometimes when I’m sitting a couple of metres from them 🙈 AM I A MASSIVE HYPOCRITE. I’d never dream of eating my pets, obviously. How does i justify this behaviour?! If my friends found out I’m still eating chicken they’d have a bloody field day! 😬

I don't think it makes you a hypocrite to own chickens you won't eat, and eat chickens you won't own. So long as you don't judge people that love their chickens but also eat them as hypocrites. There are lots of different views on this. Everyone should just do what works and feels right for them. It's when one start's trying to impose that on others that becomes problematic.

My chickens are my pets, and I'll never eat my pets. But chickens from the store are not my pets, I have never even met them. So I think it's okay to eat them. You're not a hypocrite :hugs

I totally agree. Hope I didn’t sound judgmental ❤️🐓❤️

I feel this way too! So I just need to find a comeback or ignore and get on with my way of doing things :)

Not at all!
I have separate chickens I raise for meat. I don't get SUPER attached to them, I only have them for seven weeks, but I truly love them and care greatly about their quality of life. I appreciate them for feeding me and my fam. They have names like tender, pattie and soup.
My layer flock. I think that my original 10 girls will get to just live out their natural life here. They ignited my love for poultry. The other 15 or so, when they stop laying, will hit the soup pot and be replaced. Just wanted to give you an idea of how it works here. Different flocks for different purposes.

This year I am starting a meat rabbit breeding program. It will be a challenge emotionally separating from those little cuties. But I think I am ready.

If my friends
Should the word friends have quotation marks around it?

from so-called ‘friends’?
Ah, yes, it did in your first post.

A lot of people here raise chickens and eat chickens, either the ones they raised or purchased. People used to eat animals they raised as a way of life.

The fact that the meat most people consume came from a store doesn't change that it originally came from a living, breathing animal. The fact that you eat chicken, yet raise and love some as pets does not make you a hypocrite, IMO.

Another IMO, if you explain to your friends that their remarks bother you, and they apologize and stop, then they are friends. If don't stop, they aren't.

I "quit" a friendship with someone who ridiculed my caring for my dog when she was ill.
