If there is anyone in the Hillman MI area, and know the ordinances for the area, please let me know. I cannot find any info. Neighbors have cows, horses etc, but were told we are zoned residential and no livestock allowed. So far I have heard, things like "You can have them unless/until someone complains about them..

My thanks to anyone who can help

Mommabugg, I'm not from that area, but I did a quick search (as I'm sure you did) and I found a link that may be helpful. It's for a local bb and perhaps a post there can direct you to how to find the answer if not provide an answer to your questions.

I would be very surprised if folks weren't quite non-plussed about having a few hens in Hillman. I agree with the "if your neighbors don't mind" policy. That is true of almost every ordinance. Unlicensed cars on property, etc. Have a respectful, reasonable relationship with your neighbors and you'll likely never have an issue and no one will "rat you out" for spite.

To do that, I would honor the no rooster philosophy and keep a limited number of hens. Don't push it!!! 4 hens will keep each other company, provide you with more eggs than you can eat and will scratch your hen keeping itch. Respect go both ways. Don't let them wander over to the neighbors and dig up their flowers and poop all over their lawns and walks. That's a no no.

Fred, that's what my hubby said about the area we are moving to in Wisconsin, when we found out the city limits map we had been using had been amended (after we placed our offer on the house) and the house had been annexed into the city. Long

It sits on the edge of town, a town of 62,000 +... after some digging I found out that as long as we aren't near a hospital, eating establishment, hospital, school or apartments we are allowed to keep up to 25 of the fuzzy butts (not that we need 25)but no roos, which is understandable. Don't want to annoy the neighbors, although I love the sound of a rooster crowing and was looking forward to it. Needless to say I gave up my quest to try to figure out how to camouflage them from the neighbors and did a happy dance!

Well, the hillman topix forum is a lot of silly rumor flying gossip really. I tried looking on there at one point.

As for the respectful neighbor thing. We have neighbors that, from the time the snow thaws until it snows again, run dirt bikes on their track at the end of their property.. which happens to be right under our window practically. They run these ALLLLL day from sun up till sun down. I am going to get rid of all roosters (excpet one or two banties) once theyre old enough. But they wont be allowed to free range unless theyre in a chicken tractor.

I also have neighbors with dogs that bark and howl all day and all night year round, cows and horses making a stink.. So I should hope they wont have a problem with some quacking, clucking and an occasional crow from my roosters. I have an OLD farrm house that has a good sized cement room in the basement I plan on housing them in during the winter. But I will do what I can to eliminate much of the noise. I just cannot see neighbors like mine making too much of a fuss.
