What can I give as a treat but it isn't filled with sugar and calories? I want him to still feel praised for doing the right thing.

For treats, you can use part of his normal food for the day.

Each morning, you could measure out the correct amount of food for one day and put it in a bowl or jar or something. Give him some for breakfast, some for lunch, and some each time you want him to have a treat. Anything left at the end of the day becomes his dinner.

That way you and he have the fun of treats whenever you want, but he gets the right kind of food and the right amount of food every day.

Great idea! That actually sounds like a plan!

How big is his pen? Do you have the option of creating another pen?
Notice how excited he got when you let him out of his pen into the yard? If you can switch things up for him periodically by rotating pens (or allowing access to different adjacent areas) he will move much more on his own because there are so many new smells, places to root and dig, etc.
Our girl has a welded wire "base pen", but it is connected to an electric fence set up that gets pulled up and moved around as needed. Lots of space and lots of changes of scenery have worked well for us.

I agree 100% on the food recommendations other members have given. Try placing some of his food in small caches around his pen. Hide it even... having to "find" food is not just good exercise, its enrichment.

He's getting his lunch! We are in Montana so our time is quite different than other states time but it's noon here! His lunch is in the toy ball!
