Intern with a top, proven breeder for a few years. A mentor isn't an option, it is required. Focus on one breed, especially at the beginning. Few folks can do more than a single breed without lots of help and deep pockets. Each breed requires 100 chicks on the ground and that takes infra-structure and lots and lots and lots of feed.

Finally, always start with the very, very best birds you can. That will mean getting a start from someone willing to share that kind of brood stock of quality.
