Just remember....when you DO get chickens...its an addiction....start out with either a large coop, or one you can EASILY add on to.

Welcome to BYC, Tony! I hope you are able to get chickens soon. I'm a native Hoosier ( person from the state of Indiana) but my Great-Great-Great Grandfather came from the UK! I hope you have fun here at BYC.

Hiya Tony and welcome to BYC! We're glad you found us...we love to 'talk chicken', too!

I second what Justusnak said- if you think you want say, 5 chickens...build and plan for 30. Believe me, it happens.

My favourite chickens are Buff Orpingtons, they've been my favourite from reading my first poulty book 6 years ago and I think they are amazing chickens. 6 Years is a long time to want something but at least I know it's not a fad

Hi Tony, you can't go wrong with the Buffs. They are the most friendly & sweetest chickens I've ever had.Plus if you what them to raise some chics, they are wonderful mothers.

Welcome Tony-I hail from south western Michigan. You will find this site and forum very helpful, because of all the experienced people. Buffs are very good birds for a beginner. They are docile and quiet and good egglayers. They will go broody at the drop of a hat and are dedicated mothers. You won't need an incubator with them. I don't know about the Buff roosters though. I wonder if they are as great as the hens.
