Hm how can I PROPERLY take care of a chicken?

I will think about what is best for the chicken, and make a decision. Thank you all for helping me and giving me helpful advice.

There are lots of great coop options available. If you go through the coop section on the forums here and look at some pictures it might give you some good ideas of what could work well in your yard. I would also recommend reading the article in the learning center all about chicken care as a good start then come back to to forums and ask any specific question you might have.

Also, your comment was very unnecessary, I do agree with cluckycharms that saying things in a bitter tone is what makes new posters leave and become discouraged. I am not asking saying you did say things in a bitter tone nor am I looking for sympathy. I know what I did was wrong and I accept any harsh words that may come my way.

One more thing I will add before leaving the thread alone. You are correct in 1 aspect. Me saying "Perhaps it is because I was raised differently" was uncalled for, and a prime example of what not to say to other people. If I'm going to attempt to get someone to be more polite to another person - treating them the same way they treated person A isn't going to get me anywhere. I apologize for snubbing your upbringing and agree it wasn't appropriate.

I still feel your initial post was not worded politely with regard to the OP's situation, but becoming hypocritical toward you because of it was not the right thing to do. What is posted after this, I really do not care nor desire to see, so like I said - I'm heading out the proverbial door...but felt I should apologize first.

OP - I hope everything works out well for your animals (chickens and rabbit as well).

Chickens require a coop and a run.

Living space minimums

A simple two foot by four foot plywood cube would be fine for two chickens. Design it with a large door to allow clean out. You will need to design a nest box onto one of the sides.

The perch should be off the ground. The perch should be 2X4 lumber set so the bird stands on the four inch side. This allows the bird to cover its toes in the winter.

Now the run

The run should be no smaller than four foot by four foot per bird.

The coop below is a basic starter for two birds.

Now for other basics.

Chicken feed comes in bags just like dog food does. A good farm store will have both feed and oyster shell. You will need oyster shell.

You should also have some sort of bedding material like hay, shavings, or sand to make sanitation easier.

Chickens dont really require much care. They really do take care of themselves rather well. Top up the feeder and the water every few days. Clean the run twice a month and the coop once a month if you use a lot of litter. Locking them up at night is easy too because they go to bed on their own. All you have to do is lock the coop door nightly.

The hardest thing about chickens is remembering to let them out in the morning.
