Lovely advise! I enjoy knowing that dedicated people are working so hard on the new genetic projects. They can do all of the hard work, and we can eventually benefit from it by adding the new breeds to our backyards!

I think a Cell Biology and Genetics 101 class would be a great introduction. Because you need to understand genetics in general before you can really get into genetics of the fowl. These classes aren't a piece of cake, at least to me they weren't.
Who knows, since you're young and ambitious, you may very well create your own breed or variety. And with advances in genetic engineering, who knows what tools you will be able to utilize in 20 years... Doing research projects at a university is a great way to go.
