Today I found a new type of egg in the nest box. This one is medium brown, and speckled all over.

So far, I have an EE laying tan eggs, an EE laying mint green eggs, and a salmon faverolle laying light tan eggs with just a couple speckles on them.

The hens that haven't started laying are a Delaware, a Welsummer and a Black Australorp. This egg is the same size as the faverolle's eggs, but would it be possible that she'd lay this much darker of an egg? Or is it one of the other three? The hens are about 24-25 weeks right now.

Middle egg in this photo, with the faverolle egg directly behind it:

Im pretty sure u can rule out the BA as they lay white eggs, not sure on the others but if u click the breeds link on the home page u can find pics of the eggs all your birds will lay.

So do you think it was the Welsummer? That was my first thought, but this is sort of a medium brown background, but TONS of speckles that probably make it look darker in the photo than it actually is.

I actually thought that Australorps layed brown eggs? The My Pet Chicken website says "excellent layers of light brown eggs." Is that wrong?

I think that it is a Welsummers egg. It looks the same as my girls lay. The speckles are a give away.

The Australorps egg will be a much more even brown color.

Nope, BA's are brown egg layers. My BA lays speckeled brown eggs, but not as dark as the one in the picture so I'm voting for the Welsummer.

I know I'm late to post, but I have to say Welsummer, too. It looks just like the eggs my beloved little Twiggy laid when she wasn't eggbound. Dark terra cotta with speckles all over.
