Hi gang--- been gone quite awhile, back today because I have a concern.... My hen, Perky came running over to me tonight to go into her kennel for the night, and when I picked her up, I swear, she felt sweaty , warm and damp all over her body.... most especially on the underside. Now, she isn't complaining in any way, hasn't been ill or feverish lately for any reason at all, and I know chickens don't "sweat" at all, but the phrase "dampness under the wings and on the body" is, for some reason, ringing some alarm bells of memory from something I read here ages ago for some reason!! She has been fine all this past year, but did get a small scratch on the tip of her comb at some point today, had a hard moult not long ago, but is fully feathered again now.
Only other unusual event going on is the house is being re-roofed and there is destruction/construction debris all over the place, but she has been staying well away from all the ruckus for the most part....and there has been the occasional possum, and a skunk stealing eggs from the nest box and she has pretty much abandoned it for the time being. We caught and relocated the possum just a couple days ago, but the skunk has been smarter than to get caught up to this point. It is possible, because of the predators, that she has a secret clutch set-up somewhere in the yard. So, maybe setting on eggs caused it, but, for some reason, that doesn't feel quite the right explanation either......
We are in SoFlo still, and it is pretty humid at times already, even this early in the year, but the hens have never really seemed to be affected by just the high humidity
factor like people can often be.
Anybody know why, or what it is about this "damp hen" thing is making me feel kind of anxious??
