Okay, just thinking...we probably have too many hens for our family's egg needs and I was just wondering - how many hens do you think we need just to sell the extra eggs?

crazy4daisy, depends how many folks in your family and how many eggs you consume in a week. Dozen hens will provide between 8 and 12 eggs daily, depending on the breed.

We have Buff Orpingtons (7) and in the summer they keep us in eggs. In the Fall and Spring production goes up and in the summer I'm making egg salad, frittatas, baking, etc. On average we get 1 egg every 2-3 days from each hen. We eat 4-5 eggs per day for breakfast. I just got three Easter Eggers that will start to lay in about 14 wks. The Buffs are good layers and do lay in the cold months, just not as many as we tend to eat...Red Stars and Black Stars and Rhode Island Reds are good layers too. Hope this helps.
