Some people on here call me a hoarder, just because I have three or four sheds full of valuables.

Let me explain the difference between a hoarder and a person like myself.

I am an environmentalist, I keep things that could be used in the future.

I have used most the things I save once or twice in the last 50 years or so.

I am an avid DIY person. I can’t remember the last time I took something to a shop or garage to have it fixed. The tools and items I have allow me to fix most things.

A hoarder has things like 40 years worth of National Geographic’s.

I also tend to misplace tools so I have 2, 3 or 9 of a lot of them. That way they are close to where I need them.

Hoarder is a nasty word created by the deep pocket industrialist that rule the world. They hate people like me that don’t need them. I am a threat to their way of life. They like consumers not savers. They would rather a person throw out perfectly good serviceable items and fill our landfills than have people like me who are saving the land.

Yet, they try to convey the idea people like me are destroying the world. Shame on them!


I am thinking of getting rid of some things. I have a great almost new horse shoe forge. I am not sure but if I don’t use it in the next 15- 20 years it will be sold. I just hope my Great Grandpa forgives me for selling his forge when I see him.

Also I am willing to part with some counterfeit bills of the confederacy. It appears the confederacy is not coming back, so my chances of passing them is slim.


So please stop using the word “Hoarder” it is hurtful and mean spirited.

you are right! we had an old tack room in the barn full of old wood frame house windows 50 or so yrs old. Our daughter was looking for things to decorate for her covid barn wedding, and discovered them. She cleaned up 4 of them and used them as craft project for wedding. Someone saw them in her photos and asked where she got the old windows---turns out some city dwellers will pay over 100 dollars for 1 window! $1000 ca-ching for junk in the barn
 
I prefer the term 'pack-rat'.... But...I've been referred to as both. It doesn't bother me.

And the people on tv that the media refers to as hoarders, are nothing of the like. People who live in feces and filth are not hoarders and deserve sympathy and most likely have underlying health conditions which contribute to their disorder.

Keeping things for future use in itself is not a disorder.

I am a proud hoarder of crafting supplies.
 
I'm right there with you! If we ever move, a lot of valuables that were deferred from the landfill will find their way home, but until then I may need something! Scraps of wood, metal, plastic all come in handy. Anything that breaks gets stripped of any remaining useable parts. (When it says "no user serviceable parts inside, don't believe them!)

I have helped clean out an actual hoarders house, after my mom's first cousin died. It was one of the most interesting, disgusting, depressing, puzzling things I'll do in my entire life. I spent 3 months working pretty steadily at the small wartime house and when we sold it, it was still more than half full of stuff, but more organized and (mostly) free of garbage.
 
If all your junk is organized .... it's not hording :D

I used to get rid of stuff because it was in the way .... since the plague I have started hanging onto a lot of stuff I would have normally thrown away. I think the days of tossing something that's broken and buying a new one or over. Now you tend to wonder if you can fix it first.

Define organized?
 
I got a great price on my house because it had been a hoarder house and the seller didn't want to deal with it. Forget those Youtube videos, they're not as easy to clean out as you would think. I hired three guys to help throw junk into a dumpster and they thought they could deal with it. They left at lunch time and never came back. It took a while to get all the junk out.
