Hoarding Eggs...

Okay, so i think this is pretty simple but to be honest im tired of searching for someone that asked the same question.
I have one egg in my incubator right now... because i had 12 serama eggs shipped and when none developed and were supposed to be "guaranteed fertile" i was accused of having a broken incubator then written off. I grabbed an egg right outta the coop and tossed it in...10 days later i have a beautiful flopping squirming chippy in that egg. the incubator is perfect...thanks for nothing lady.
I digress...
I have 2 serama hens that are laying right now and i am wondering how many days it is safe to hoard these up so i can get as many eggs in this incubator when it opens up as possible.
what...max...is the amount of days i can have these eggs out of the incubator while i wait for more before they wont develop once in there.

Sorry your shipped eggs did not develop and hatch. Most often the cause for lack of development is the rough handling during shipment. Any blood rings? DId you open the eggs to see the level of development. Very disappointing no matter what. THe hatching rate of your own eggs is much better! You'll enjoy the results of having your own hens and roosters.

For best results, store eggs 7 days. 10 days is pushing it and hatchability starts to decline. This is for the best results; some eggs held for 3 weeks will still hatch but it's a low hatching %.

You may already know how to store the eggs. But if not, here is the basics. Store at 45-60 degrees in a humid area. Turn the eggs daily.

Oh man. 10 days. Lol. My turner holds 16...I can totally get that in 10 days.

That is the reason that I don't buy shipped eggs....xrays and the rough handling of the post office doesn't make for a good hatch rate....alot of times it isn't the fault of the seller....sorry about your bad experience....

I definitely realize it's not their fault necessarily, but it doesn't seem right to attempt to dismiss yourself of any blame, and then shift the blame you've narrowly dodged. Just a bummer. Especially considering I waited til day 11 to candle. No blood rings. Just lit up like a store egg. Total bummer. Looking forward to my weird wyandotte/bantam cross though. Haha.

Just as some buyers don't realise that eggs sent through the post can be 100% fertile but be totally scrambled by shipping, I think that some sellers also don't realise it either! They know fine well that their eggs have high fertility and they constantly get 90-100% hatch rates themselves, so if they don't realise the destruction that can be wreaked by rough shipping, what else are they going to think but that it must be the buyer's incubating skills that are at fault...

I'm not saying ignorance excuses any rudeness, on the part of the buyer OR the seller, I'm just saying that some people just genuinely don't know what's going on but they DO know they're doing everything right themselves yet things are still going wrong at the other end, and they can't help but get annoyed when they're quizzed about it as if it might be their fault.

I remember years ago a rather terse email exchange with a seller I'd bought a whole bunch of hatching eggs from and only had two hatch out. I tried to politely ask about his own fertility rates, but he took offence and told me I must have messed up my humidity. Looking back with 20/20 hindsight, I could have made it clearer I wasn't blaming his eggs. I was just interested. And he could have been calmer in explaining that he knew his eggs were fine fertility wise. It was neither of our faults, but we both ended up angry at each other about it. A pity, cause we were both big fans of the same rare breeds and both just trying to keep the breed going...

I understand. I did essentially the same thing. I asked if she had an estimation of a normal hatch rate and she responded with the question as to what mine was. I told her zero because none developed then she jumpe rudely on the defense attacking my incubation methods. I wasn't rude or asking even for a refund or replacement. Just asking.
It isn't/wasn't my first time ordering eggs...or even getting a zero hatch rate. It was just the frat time that a simple inquiry flipped into an attack. That's what left the bad taste in my mouth.
