Hi Everyone!
I have a hen (the very obvious Alpha) that I noticed yesterday had raspy hindered breathing. She was moving around and eating, just very noisy breathing. And, when she tried to make sounds, they came out hoarse like she had laryngitis. I thought maybe it would clear itself. This morning, she is not trying to make sounds, is still sounding like she's having really uncomfortable dangerous breathing, and she didn't come out of the coop with the others... so I know something is going on that she's not able to clear herself.
Her crop does not feel full. I did not see anything obvious in her mouth, although she put up a fight with me on that one. I gave her some vegetable oil and gently tilted forward while holding her so she was upside down to see if it would loosen any obstruction. She does breathe easier when she's upside down BUT gets raspy again when I put her upright. Do you think the vegetable oil will take a little bit to work? She is free ranging now (actually hiding under a bush) so I will check her again in a bit.
Any other thoughts out there as to what may be going on? I did think I saw a little tiny bit of yellow by the corner of her mouth... I'm wondering if she got to an egg and has a little shell lodged? I don't know if that's possible. Just a thought.
Thank you everyone for any and all input!
