Hi all,
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? New to chickens here in N. Texas as of about a month ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We went to the local TSC to get 6 chicks and bought 10 because...chicken math.
(3) What breeds do you have? We have 3 Sapphire Blue Plymouth Rocks, 3 Welbars, 3 Easter Eggers, and (maybe?) 1 Cream Legbar (the jury's still out on that one).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I love that my children get to experience animal husbandry in a way they don't get to with our rescue dogs. They'll learn a different level of responsibility, collect eggs to sell, and learn business skills. I also love animals but since we're just shy of 2 acres, we're not permitted to own more than 1 large livestock animal per acre. For us, that means only 1 cow, 1 goat, 1 donkey...you get it. You can't have just 1 cow! Poor girl would get lonely. So, there you go. Although, my husband says chickens are like a gateway drug and he fully expects that we'll be needing more land in the near future for the other animals that we just *have* to have.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We have a hobby farm geared almost entirely toward subsistence that's not at full production just yet but, we're getting there. Through some trial and error, we've been able to supplement a large chunk of our produce. I love gardening. It's something my family has done for generations. I also dabble in graphic design, play the guitar, and I'm a lifelong learner. I read dozens of books before getting a single chick.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a lawyer and my husband is a general contractor. We have 2 kids, 2 rescue dogs, and I make a mean blueberry peach cobbler with the fruit from our mini orchard
