Hi all!
My name is Melanie and I live in a small fishing village on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula. My husband and I moved here with our 15 year old son and 11 & 8 year old daughters last July from Toronto, Canada. We also have 2 siamese cats (indoor).
We recently got 15 straight run chicks that are about a week old and we I have another who is about 8 weeks old - one of a pair given to us by a friend
I'm not sure of the breed. most look like barred plymouth rock, but I think they're mixed breed, based on their variations in coloration/patterns.
it's above 30C here pretty much every day of the year, so we only need to build a simple coop that gives shelter from sun and rain; we're enclosing it on all sides/top/bottom with 1/2" square wire to protect from as many predators as possible. Many of the locals don't use coops at all - their chickens run free and they put perches in trees for them to sleep in.
As we are new at keeping chickens, I'm looking forward to learning lots from this group!
