Long time reader. I've been reading posts without being a member for some time now. I bought my home here in the city (Tacoma, WA) just over a year ago and I knew I wanted chickens. I have 2 Serama hens, one Easter Egger (who loves to jump over her barriers), one brahma hen, and one barred rock. The barred rock is why I spent most of my time reading these forums. She doesn't lay the best eggs, but with some changes she is laying eggs that are a lot less unappealing. Her eggs would normally have blood spots in them and I wasn't going to cull her if that was all that was wrong.

I've taken to hatching eggs in an incubator and finding those chicks homes. The hatching and raising part has become my hobby. So far I only have focused on hatching various quails.

Well, that's me.

What are you feeding your layers? You can put out an separate dish with crushed oyster shell- a good source of calcium . If hens need it they will do so of free will.
I think my chickens are treated better than my own kids. They get grit, dried bugs, free range yard, boiled eggs, ground egg shell, oyster shell, and I have just started raising mealworms for extra treats.
