Is this a peck hole? This is the first time we have seen this. I didn't even notice it until this morning. It was from yesterday. Is it safe to eat?

I just toss broken eggs into the compost. But from your egg the membrane doesn’t look to be broken. It might not have any kind of diseases in it. If your cooking it that will also most likely kill anything harmful off it. It’s your choice what you want to do with it.

Thanks! I decided to just chuck it. If I would have noticed it last night I would have put it in the fridge and not have been as concerned.

Slight side topic, since the membrane wasn't ruptured, do I have to worry about repeated pecking? This is the first time that has happened. We have 2 newer layers (laying since mid April) and one currently laying since January. Was this just a freak incident or should I be watching on for more?

I’d keep an eye out. But I wouldn’t be worried. Sometimes chickens just get curious and peck things, it’s what they do. Chances are it’s nothing, but I’d still keep an eye out just incase you notice more pecks.

I have one hen that's rough at moving the eggs around. She occasionally makes a peck hole in them. It's not intentional.

Thanks! I also collected the eggs later than usual and it could have even been one of my juvenile EEs.

I had two eggs like this a few months ago, and it's weird because my girls don't usually do that. I had two hens that used to break and eat eggs, but after putting fake eggs in the nest for a while, they got the idea not to do that. One day when I went to check for eggs, I saw some wild birds in the coop. I think they were the ones doing it. If wild birds can get into your coop, maybe you also have wild birds pecking eggs?
