My *@&#% of a red star just pecked a hole in the neck of my silkie. I can pick up the skin and see inside. She is bloody buy not bleeding out. She is walking around okay but how do I clean and prevent infection???

I had a cut in my silike a few weeks ago I rinsed it with salt water and put a bit of pollysporen on it and it went away with out any problems and she was 2 weeks old (weak immune system). I rinsed it down about 4-5 times a day.

Is the hole big?

I would say it's twice the size of a pin head. Is this a vital area ? As in, could she bleed internally? Lose too much blood? Get infection? I thought about cutting feathers back but then they help keep out the elements.

If it was me, but I am no expert...I would clean and coat with antibiotic ointment a couple times a day. My hen had a pretty good head injury from a coon and she healed nicely. Unless it is a major vein it shouldn't bleed out. Might want to keep her from roaming and getting dirt in the wound for a couple of days.

I cut the feathers as close to the skin as possible. Rinse the wound with 1/2 peroxide 1/2 water for the first wash. Pat dry and put antibiotic ointment on it. Rinse with saline 2x day and ointment. It should heal quickly.

Thanks, guys. I flushed it with saline the best I could. I covered in neosporin. Looks like she'll be in the kennel a couple days. The bleeding stopped and I cooked her an egg. And I thought I was just going to have a quiet night with my book.
