Holes in Eggs?

My chickens are new to laying, they are 5 months old. I am getting more eggs each day. Today I got 6 eggs outta 10 hens. I’ve been eating the eggs already but today I decided to boil a few eggs to eat. The shells are all very hard and uniform, great looking eggs but when I put them in the pot of warm water to bring to a boil they had a tiny constant stream of air bubbles coming out of the shell. Out of six eggs in the pot I would say four of them each had there own little tiny steam of bubbles coming out of the egg through the shell. Wouldn’t this allow bacteria in? Can’t remember ever seeing this from store bought eggs. Which I can’t say I paid much attention to my store bought eggs

Egg shells are porous. You normally do not see air bubbles come out of fresh eggs because the air cell is non existent. As the egg ages and looses moisture, the air cell gets larger so more air will escape when you boil them. I think you are just paying closer attention.

In addition to what Percheron chick rightly says, the bloom is what keeps bacteria out. If you do not trust the packaging that nature has provided, and depending on where you live and what you intend to do with the eggs, the official advice may be to not wash them and leave the bloom to do its job, or to wash them and then refrigerate and/or sterilise them.

New layers will often crack the shell moving the egg around. Sometimes it’s so small you hardly notice it. As long as the membrane isn’t broken, a crack shouldn’t harm the egg.

I keep a candler or flashlight out and check the eggs every couple days to see if there are any cracks and if so, toss them in the fridge.

Eggs are porous, and I’ve always seen a stream of bubbles from store bought basic white eggs. I’ve only boiled a few eggs from our flock, so haven’t noticed any bubbles from them. Older eggs peel easier, so I don’t usually boil the fresh eggs from our flock.

Enjoy the fresh eggs!
