Holy chicken math......

So, I started by telling my husband I wanted to get two chickens. I purchased an Eglu Go. However, when I went to the chicken breeder I came home with three girls. Okay, not a huge coop, but the girls free ranged and all was well......until I went to the feed store and came home with three more girls. Mmm hmmm. So I ordered a second Eglu Go and insisted that now the girls weren't so safe and they needed a predator proof walk in run. I wanted sand in the run, I wanted outdoor roosts, I wanted a swing for the girls. We built all that and then the girls decided, seven months later, that they no longer want to sleep separately despite the fact that they used to divide up at bed time. So, I told my husband this weekend that it's time to build a new coop to attach to our awesome run. Oh, and I want to redo the roof of our run in UV corrugated panels. Oh oh, and while we're at it the new coop might as well be big enough for a few more girls because spring is coming and really my brown eggs are nice, but wouldn't some blue/green eggs make a nice edition?

I'm thinking my husband is regretting his opinion that sure, go ahead, how much trouble could two little chickens cause? Pictures of all our updates to follow.

You need some white and dark brown eggs to go with your medium brown and green eggs.

It's called chicken math? Do a lookup and search on chicken math LOL. You need to build a double the size you think for the chickens. Put chicken cloth on the base dug down about 6" or more and fill it back in and wire it to 4 sides that can be built to side walls up against a brooder/sleeper at least 6' wide by 5' or 6' long with egg doors and side access to get in there with perches for 4 to 6 girls and a roo. good luck to you

hehe.. i'm so afraid that I'm going to be right behind you. I have 4 on order, but I know once we get them I'm gonna want more. I'm building a big coop just to plan for that (although DH doesn't really know that's the reason why!) When we originally were thinking about getting chicks, I started at a couple - then I mentioned three - but ordered four. He was like "what happened to just three?" hehe.

I keep telling my husband I'll resist any more chickens this summer. And yet I find myself on Craiglist looking at chickens!

Mine quickly went from a momma and her chicks to about 8 then 10 then 23 then well I don't know got about 35. Love them all. All have names. Still looking for more ! Good luck with your math ! LOL

I started a few years ago wanting 20, we came home with 55 because we got a great price on the birds. the 1st batch was mainly mix birds but now we usually have 70+ grown birds and hatch 5-6 dozen eggs a week to sell chicks. Chicken math got me but now we are getting into the rarer breeds so we cant exactly buy a lot at once. I am glad that I started raising chickens! They are a great hobby!
