I am desperate to keep my beautiful rooster but he cock-a-doodle-do's too much and I live in a town. I bought him as a hen when he was ten weeks old but he turned out to be a rooster. He is a very friendly rooster and beautiful

too. I am crying writing this because I don't want to let him go. Does anyone know if I can have him knewtered and if that would stop him crowing. If not any ideas on finding him a new home. I live in Swindon Wiltshire UK.

He is very handsom! This is so sad, I am sorry you have to get rid of him.

You can neuter males, but it is done very early on, it's called caponizing. I would not recommend doing it or if you wanted to try you would need a qualitdfied avian vet that has all the equipment and anesthesia necessary and even then there is no guarantee he would not crow although it may reduce the frequency.

The is a thread you could search for here on BYC started by a US vet asking if there was a market for de-crowing roosters. There was a description where he did surgery making slits in the syrinx (voice box) and the air was shunted into the air sacs instead of through the voie box and the sound was greatly decreased. You would have to find an avian vet that has been trained in this surgery aim England.

Your best bet is to find him a home. You can post an ad here on BYC in the buy/sell section. I rehomed 3 cockerels this last fall by placing an ad on Craigslist. Not sure if you have that over there, but I am sure there must be online ad services that are similar. When I placed my ad I got lots of calls from folks that sounded like they wanted dinner or other uses. I waited patiently and a ldy called and took all three. She wanted roosters for her flock so she could raise chicks for self-sufficiency plus as flock protectors from coyotes and foxes.

Good luck, on the plus side he is really beautiful do it might be easier to rehomed him.

Awhh thank you so much for such a great reply. I really appreciate it. He is so gorgeous I would nearly sell my house and move but not realistic. I think we have Craig's list. We are trying to restrict the ought in the chicken house.
I will let you know how it goes. c :)
