Home made incubator VS. Little Giant $40 bator

Good choice on the LG. I will warn you, it does take a little while to get a hang of it. I just got the hang of mine and I have had it for about 3 months. It isnt really hard to control it but you just need to know some about it. Goodluck, -Jay

Do homemade incubators work for ducks?

Well this little cutie started out with 5 other eggs in an incubator made out of a cigar humidor. It gave me headaches the whole time and I even had a part break and had to rebuild it by moving the equipment in to a cooler set up in the middle of everything. Some of the other eggs cracked and the rest quit, but JJ is doing great after hatching on Saturday.

The new incarnation of my incubator is doing much better ( a "cooler-bator" much like the award winning Gopherbator). I have 4 more eggs all developing well after almost 2 weeks.

My problems near the end had less to do with the incubator being homemade and more to do with the fact that I live in Colorado and it is wicked dry here right now. As long as you don't make the mistake of trying to use too small of a container (like I did with my cigar humidor), a homemade incubator is fine.

I had a Little Giant and it drove me nuts trying to regulate the temp and humidity. Finally sold it and built a homemade one. I've got chicks pipping today, and the duck eggs are developing just fine.

Here's a tip for duck eggs... mist them a couple of times a day with water.

In my experience, ducks are easier to hatch than chickens. Not sure why, but I have more chicks die in the shell.
