You can make a similar small one with a 1-gallon milk jug.

Make a small knife slit at the base. Just enough to faintly trickle a little water.

Set it down in a pan. Eventually the pan fills, covering the knife slit, and the water flow stops. The lid needs to be on to create the vacuum seal.

These also make dandy slow waterers for sapling trees you've planted and such.

Thanks everyone

It's early.... so just to make sure I understand this..... scientists out there..... I wanted to make the five gallon bucket facing up (not upside down) so I have a handle and all to carry the water. (IF) I put an air tight lid on then it should work, if I make the hole under the water line, right?! I'll try it and let you know

If you take the bucket as you've described, right side up with the handle easily accessed for carrying, and put the holes near where the top screws on, then you can fill your bucket, screw on the lid air-tight, carry it to the pan you'll be setting it in, invert it, and as long as the holes in the bucket end up being below the top lip of the pan it's set in, then you'll have a super waterer.

if in understand right you want a five gallon bucket with the hole at the bottom so you can use the handle? but you would have to plug up the hole with something or your water will come out as you carry it. if i am understanding you right

if that is right how about a extra bucket to have with a handle to bring water to the waterer you make?
that is what i do, because mine does not have handles

I just carry water and a cleaning brush to my waterers. But if you had a perfect air tight lid, which I have yet to find on a 5 gallon bucket, in theory it would work. You would need to get a cork or some stop to keep the water from coming out the bottom as you were filling it though, since it would otherwise leak out before getting the cover on snugly enough.
