Home Through The Seasons...and Chickens (GRAPHICS HEAVY)

Lee's right. The CD's bounce and throw reflections and usually keep birds away and over the pen, confuse hawks, making a dive more difficult for them. We have lots of hawks, none ever made it into the pen or even tried to my knowledge.
Robin, I don't know what kind of roses those are-they are from cuttings off my grandfather's farm in Carrollton, via my dad's house. The red ones were already here so I have no idea what those are either. This was an estate and there was no one to ask. Our family farm was sold years ago, but I have lots of roses around, of various once a year blooming varieties, that came from there. They're family heirlooms, in a way. They only had maybe five blooms this year and most of my roses didn't bloom at all-bad year for alot of stuff.
We do get the ice storms-those are far worse than snow. You can drive in snow, but no one can drive on ice. It can be awful with lots of power outages. We had horrible ice storms even when I lived as a kid down in metro Atlanta. I much prefer the mountains. I may move from here one day, but I'll look for a place in the Tennessee mountains.

I think that's my problem with the snow. We usually get freezing rain that looks like snow. I think we've only had snow a couple of times in my 24 years of life. We did get about a foot and a half once about 7 years ago.

During ice storms the ice coats tree branches and cause them to break (and land on houses and cars) and the ice coats the power lines causing them to snap or hang down really low. And usually the power goes out. When that happens it's me, DH, 6 cats and a cockatiel sleeping in front of the fire place in the living room.

Cynthia, very beautiful place you have. I LOVE the porch. ALL the new homes here are built for people to stay INSIDE. NO porches, usually no ability to open windows for cross breeze, etc. They are made for staying indoors, in the A/C.

I am totally enamoured with your wraparound porch. We are lucky we have a house that does have a fairly size porch for a city house, and also cross ventilation. Now if we could just pick it up an move it to the country!

Oh Jill,
I know about the no porches - we're planning to open our dining area with a sliding door - which will lead straight to our back yard (there is no way now to get there without going round the house or through the garage)
Then we're going to put up a deck of sorts - probably enclose it a little for the wind....
One of these days.........................

(we have an enclosed porch on the side of our house - other side of the kitchen which leads to the garage - we want to use that as a dinning area)

I'm going to start collecting CD's now - perhaps I can hang a few and keep some nasty visitors away!
