I have 4 ex batts, they sleep in their nest boxes despite having perches, I am assuming they don't know they are supposed to perch because they were denied their basic behavioural instincts whilst in "Prison" but now they are "Free" can they be trained, or are they too old to learn new tricks? (Approx 18m) It would be so much easier to clean up their Poo if it just landed below their perches instead of being ground into their bedding!

Thanks in advance! xx

Quote: At night, when the girls go to bed, put something up to block access to the nest boxes. I imagine they are probably a bit skittish of you? Go into the coop after dark and if they are sleeping on the floor (since the nest boxes are closed off) then carefully lift each girl onto the roosting pole. You may need to do this for many nights, but they are certainly not to old or deprived to learn. Good for you for saving them!! They must feel like they have been pulled from the depths of hell and welcomed into heaven. Also, I'd love to share with you the benefits of using sand as covering for your coop. It's VERY clean and odor free! It's super easy to maintain as well. Go Here to see.

I will try it tonight! My Girls are'nt scared of me, I have had them eating (literally) out of my hand, But I seem to have a thing with birds, as i always seem to get injured Seagulls & Pigeons in my Garden! (I even manage to help some to get better, and go free into the wild again after recouperation) I love your Country Chronicles, gonna get some Sand too.
Will let you know how I get on.

What a beautiful gift you have with animals. My daughter Tara is the same way. You have a good heart and your chickens are so blessed to have you caring for them!! :love
