I am in southern Fairfield County, CT and in May got 4 RIR as my first backyard flock. Sadly I think the cutest and most friendly of the 4 is a rooster and town ordinancy will not allow them. Looking for someone to adopt him who will take good care of him and integrate him into their flock. I am willing to deliver him if it is a reasonable distance.

Sorry to say... your young "friendly" cockerel... is actually a young CONFIDENT cockerel... who will have no respect for you or your space. Those are the ones that turn into demons who attack the human. The ones who avoid you are actually FAR preferred to "friendly" cockerels. In the chicken world fear = respect, unfortunately. Once hormones kick in... all bets are off, because he KNOWS you won't hurt him. The attacks will likely start from behind.

I was shocked the first time someone told me this... and I really liked that friendly little lap boy... until he tried to pull a hen out of my lap and the stalking, and crowing directly at me became relentless and the surprise attacks became common.

When I see people advertising a "friendly" cockerel... I know they are unfortunately misinformed... most of the time. :barnie

Hopefully I'm wrong. I know ALL birds are individuals... but there is a precedence for my concern... in MANY more people than just myself. Please know I don't mean nastiness... just sharing information. :fl

Try in your state page here. Re-homing roosters is very difficult. And once they are no longer yours, you don’t get any say.

You might get lucky, but it doesn’t happen very often. So then people are tempted to keep them, hence the post above. But that has it’s own set of problems, especially in a small flock, in a back yard set up, especially with a very dominant bird, which is what your boy is showing. They are not like puppies, where curiosity and friendliness is a good sign.

You can also post at the feed store, Craigslist, or join into a poultry club. Sometimes 4-h kids will take one. Check out the county fair.

My advise is enjoy him now, but know that he is going, and don’t ask any questions if someone is willing to take him.

I appreciate all the advise and insight, this is my first foray into the poultry world and its only been a few months. My main concern is not causing a nuisance to my neighbors with any noise. At the moment he is only squawking in morning after being let out and in evening before going in.

Better get rid of him quick....so you won't have to forfeit your other birds by breaking the ordinance.

Unfortunately, his scenario is highly unlikely.

Try your state chat thread...oh you did...and looks like you got a bite:
