Okay so I have some eggs coming that are going in our incubator. However I just couldn't say no and now I have some more on their way as well. So I need to put together something quickly. I have looked over some of the homeade ones and honestly they look a little intimidating for someone who isn't mechanically inclined. I have found an old cooler, some plexiglass(for a window), a pc fan, a wire rack for cooling cookies on, and an old light socket/wire. I don't have a regular thermometer but have a meat one would that work? Is it necessary to have a thermostat, as I've seen that listed in numerous instructions? I figure I have an aluminum pie pan so I could put that below the wire rack with some water in it. I was thinking of securing an egg carton to a dowel rod to they could be rotated from side to side throughout the day. Do I need some sort of ventilation or would that defeat the whole purpose of creating the right enviorment with warmth and humidity. That brings me to my next question. Is it necessary to measure humidity? I'm not opposed to getting some extra things but was hoping to put something together with what we have here. After reading through numerous posts it seems that incubating and hatching eggs has gotten alot more complicated that is used to be in science class, eons ago, when we would hatch eggs for a science experiment. The incubators back then never had any instruments to read temp and humidity. LOL

Hi, I have never made a homemade incubator before but wanted to help maybe put it in perspective for you. You need a container with adequate ventilation (the babies need to breath), humidity, a constant temp and a way to know you have it. So a thermostat is not needed if you can maintain the proper temp (the thermostat makes this easier to achieve I think) The use for fans as I understand it is to help maintain a more even temp (meaning no hot or cold spots). This is an example of how simple an incubator can be

I'm still going to try this but I just got a Little Giant from my brother. Hope it works....

I have an Lg...ever used one? there touchy...lol. set and run it with a meter for 2-4 days before you put eggs in.

Dont be discouraged about building you bator. Just remember all you need is a heat source, Thermostat. If you want to put all the bells and whistles in you can. Check speckled hens bator plans they are pretty thorough.

Take a deep breath and enjoy the journey. What are you hatching first? I look forward to hearing how it goes.
