I've noticed a lot of homemade bators have the light bulb shielded. Is this to diffuse the heat and distribute it evenly?

The shield is to keep the light from hitting the eggs. Like the sun the radiant light heat waves heat what they hit. In the incubator that means eggs with light hitting them will be hotter than eggs with no light hitting them.

Thank you that might have solved my problem...... Can anything be used to diffuse the light or is one material better than another?

Sweet I have plenty of sturdy cardboard. Guess I'll make the adjustments, plug it back in and monitor the temp.
