Homemade Chicken Feed?

Hi there.

I have always bought feed but am curious how easy it is too make my own chicken feed from TSC or a local feed store because it is easy. If I were too buy the necessary ingredients to make my own feed, approximately how much time would be spent mixing etc and what would be the cost difference? I currently spend about $17 for a 25kg bag of layer mix and $11 for 25kg of cracked corn(CND). I usually 50kg of layer feed with 25kg of cracked corn.

I think you will spend double the money and triple the time to make your own feed vs. just buying a complete feed at the store.

This is just my opinion.
I used to think I would like to make my own feed too but it is just so much easier to buy it.

Save your time and money and buy a quality feed. Then you can enjoy your birds instead of working to make a feed that in all likelihood is both more expensive and less nutritious.

Don't waste money on corn.
Think of it as chips and or junk food.
If you must buy it only feed it out once week and a very small amount.


IF you are feeding a 20% protein layer feed and you are mixing 25 pounds of corn with a 50 pound layer feed bad you are lowering the total protein amounts down to 16%

If you are only buying a 16% layer feed and still mixing/adding/feeding corn you are going to be way low on protein amounts which means you are going to have problems, potentially.

x2! Mixing corn into any ration will unbalance the feed, and also, the birds will eat the corn before eating the balanced feed, so will be malnourished. I'd eat the candy first too!
Home made is much more expensive and difficult. You are much better off, and your birds are going to be healthier, eating a good balanced commercial ration.
