Homemade Feeder Question

I just made these 4" pvc feeders, and the hens are going crazy, but they are making a huge mess. How do I prevent this?

Good job. Unfortunately, one of the design flaws of that particular approach to DIY feeders is that it leaves the feed exposed for a massive amount of billing and waste. Redesigning to something that makes the access point an in and down is the way to eliminate the issue -- something like this:


ETA - the reason this small difference works is it puts the feed at the bottom (where the cap is) rather than coming out through the opening where it can be drug out and wasted.

Oh, I wish I knew this earlier. I wonder if I can use a cap with a hole so they can't dig so much out.
