homemade feeders by RendonRoo

Thanks turns out I had some 3 inch pipe after all. The pics you have made it look super big (i am a visual person so 3" did not sink in, lol) and was wondering if it was going to work for me. Well after getting the pvc cut I realized I should have checked here long ago. lol
I love it.. I did this during my lunch break in my office. lol
made 7 of them. Now I do have a question.. I plan on making a second batch when I have the money to put the oyster shell in.
I have about 12-20 silkies per pen is one of these feeders enough?
I got the gutter trough in there now and hate it as they stand in it and kick it out. So will they all learn to take turns? Not all of them eat at the same time so was wondering if one will be enough for them per pen.
Don't have a lot of funds with other half so sick.

I want to thank you very much for sharing your invention as I know I greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Katythechickenlady, I think another bend on top would make it too hard for them to reach the feed. Not sure how to fix that problem. Possibly put the feeders inside the coop(I have them inside all my coops and they just go inside to eat). I also have them outside but i have mine mounted so that blowing rain doesn't ever reach them.
Cjexotic, Thanks for the compliment and happy you like these. My hens don't eat that much oystershell(I have 10 in one pen) so i would think for silkies you could make a small one out of 1 1/2 or 1 1/4" pipe and be fine. My girls take turns eating from the feeders and don't fight to get to them at all.
Good Luck

Your welcome.
So 20 should be fine off one feeder (that would be great)? That is a good idea for the oyster shell as you are right.. it would be an over kill for oyster shell.. But have a question. I use 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 what fitting do I use such as reducers and such.
Would that be a good size to use for pheasant feeders that are up in cages?
My OH that is terminal has pheasants and I just built him 12 above ground pens that are 24" by 51" (without nesting box) and they roost on top of the feed bowl and poop in them. Plus he has lost a couple as he does not move fast enough when feeding and they escaped from him. This way I could mount on the outside and he does not have to open the pen door to feed. thanks for your help. cj

You would not need a reducer if you use 1 1/2 or 1 1/4"pipe. Just put the 90 and 45degree elbows together and there you go.
Sounds like this would work great for your friend too. just be sure to put a cap on top so the rain won't get into the feed. BTW.... thanks for taking care of your friend, too often we get wrapped up in our own lives and forget the ones that really need our attention. Bless You.

Thanks for your help.. I am getting the items today.. a hardware store that I use just up from work wanted to know what I was doing with the 3" stuff and I told him. He has rabbits and is going to do the same as the rabbits dig out their food in what he uses now. I called this morning to get a price on the 1 1/2" stuff and he is donating the stuff to make 12 hoppers for my OH (other half). So that is great. I think I am going to make a few of the smaller ones for my above ground chick pens.. that way the chicks are not scratching out the feed everywhere. woohoo I am on a roll. lol
Here is a pic of the pens I made. Now don't laugh..as I am a women and I don't measure anything only eye ball it. I used kitty litter buckets for the nesting boxes to save floor space.

on the back row I will put the hoppers in the back next to the nesting box. the ones in the front I have not decided as I can not get the the back as the OH put some kind of winterize on the top front of the back pen and then stapled to the back of the front pen. so I can not get back there.
I think I am going to make the hoppers 12 to 18" high and not two feet.. as pheasants don't eat much. What do you think? Looking for advice before cutting the pipe.

I made a few of these about a month ago and they have been working quite well. Here is my 3 inch feeder:

And here is my 2 inch feeder.

I have since added a 2 inch feeder next to the 3 inch one with oyster shell.

I found the 3 inch ones work a bit better than the 2 inch ones with the crumbles we use. I suggest not filling the pipe more than half way with food unless you really need to. It will flow better.

Not sure if anyone has "re" stores around them.... ours is run by salvation army and habitat for humanity.

4" y pipes fifty cents, 45's were 50 also and a length of 4" for another buck.

I bought some ran gutter protection plastic, lots of holes, though it would make for a good "anti food every where thingy.

They sell it all! cabinets, light fixtures, mirrors and windows + + +.

I use bi-fold doors ( at $6 each, 2- 14"/ 24" sections) for garage storage shelving.

Good luck and thanks for the great feeder ideas.

cjexotic, Nice job on the pens. They look good even if your a woman.LOL. I admire all the women here that take on task like this. I've actually found that many women catch on better than a lot of men that aren't mechanically inclined.
Yes i think the shorter pipes will do fine in the pens. Keep up the good work.
