I just made my chickens a homemade flock block!
I don't know if any of you guys have bought the blocks recently, but they're pretty pricey. I love my chickens and all but I don't think I should have to pay $14 for a block of grains that I can make myself. So I made one!
Flock Block recipe:
their laying crumbles
premium wild bird/song bird seed with sunflower seeds, peanuts, safflower seeds, dried cherries, and raisins in it
some stale homemade bread, that I crumbled
cherrios, a favorite treat
oatmeal
and as a binder, I used mollasses and an egg.
I put it in a greased 9 x 9 square pan.
I haven't put it in the oven yet, my bread is rising in there so it needs a few more minutes. When I do bake it, I'll bake it at 350 for 30 minutes or until hard to the touch.
Then once out, I'll probably cut it into 4 cubes, so I can give them one at a time and bag the rest for later.
Hopefully my chickens like it, it smells pretty good. hahaha. I thought maybe this would help if any of you wanted to make your own flock block to save a few bucks. You can put whatever you have on hand in there, as long as your chickens like it! This stuff is just what I had.
