Homemade incubator troubleshooting

I just recently made an incubator similar to this one https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=10117 using the same thermostat. The issue I have run into is that the thermostat will not turn the light back on until it dips down to 85 degrees. Has anyone else used this thermostat and had the same problem? Should I just get a different thermostat? If I should, does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable, but inexpensive one?

I think its great to see all the different folks building their own incubators. Something that really seems to be a hang-up for some is finding a workable, reliable thermostat.

The wafer type thermostat has been in use controlling the temps in incubators and brooders since the use of electricity came on the scene. The wafer itself was used on some kerosene heated incubators even before the electric models were developed.

Wafer thermostats are readily available from a number of internet sources for about the price of a dozen shipped eggs. McMurray, GQF, Randal Burkey, and others all carry them.

For a few dollars more a Solid State Thermostat like the one used in the Little Giant may be had. Like this one on eBay, Item number: 370359283103

Yes the water heater thermostat is dirt cheap and easy to find locally, but I just wanted to share this information so that, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, folks can get their homemade incubators up and running and get on with the fun of hatching.

Attach the stat so that the back plate is touching a piece of metal, within Id say 1-3 inches from the bulb.

Those stats dont read ambient/air temp too well, they need to be touching something [metal].

I attached mine to the metal housing from the computer fan, its about 1" away from the bulb, and my fluctuation was never more than 2 degrees.

I tried placing the thermostat with the back facing the light bulb about an inch away and was still getting a swing of 5*. I decided to go ahead and order another thermostat. Definitely not worth the worry. Thanks for all the help!
