I'm not thrilled with the nutritional content of scratch grain and buying healthy seed and veggie based mixes is very expensive. They get bored without something to pick at since I can't free range them and its nice to lure them in early when I have to be gone before their usual bedtime. Does anyone have a nice healthy recipe for making my own mix? Thanks!

I don't like scratch grains either. For one thing, the cracked corn loses it's nutrients faster than unbroken seeds. You also can't adjust it seasonally based on temperature.
I buy 50 lb. bags of wheat, barley, oats and sunflower seed both stripe and black oil.
In hot weather they get oats and a little bit of stripe.
In colder weather they get wheat, barley and BOSS.
I've also started sprouting and feed that rather than just the seed.

I don't think I can store that much at a time but I will check with my bulk food store to see if I can get them to do up smaller bags for me. I always have BOSS yearround for my bird feeders.
