Homemade Yogurt **Updated** Cheese and Buttermilk

Cream doesn't separate from goats milk like it does for cows milk. You will get a little bit of cream rising but not like it does for cows milk. If you have a cream separator or can rig something up you can skim the cream and make butter. Some people milk and skim what cream that does rise and save it in the freezer until there is enough to churn for butter.

I havent done the cheese thing Im not sure where I could get the tablets and stuff around here unless I order it off the internet. I may try, but I was wondering if we can cook something else! Anymore good homemade recipes!?

Also how long does the creme sit out for? How thick does it get?
A page on the internet mentioned heating to 105 is 85 high enough?

I just have to say, I finally tried the homemade yogurt. With my busy schedule finally found the time but it was well worth it. I loved it. I attend full time college and full time work plus take care of 36 layers and have baby turkeys and 2 week old cornish in the brooders......but I so wanted to try it...it will definatly be a regulary happening. From the co-op I bought organic whole milk and organic yogurt. It was a bit too tart but I can work with it. I let it set in the cooler for about 11 hours. I think next time I will take it out in less time. It really is different from the stuff you buy at the store. I am going to try the cheese next.

Thank you Miss Prissy for all the great receipes.

Every time I see your name I laugh as I have a roo who I named Foghorn Leghorn as he completely reminds me of the cartoon. He thinks way to highly of himself but I love him.

Hi Folks! I found a link to this forum on a blog I was reading.
I don't have chickens yet but in a few months I will for sure.

But I really wanted to Thank you for the yogurt making instructions! It works! I got a thermos yesterday and made yogurt last night. IT IS DELICIOUS!!!! I purchased yogurt starter from New England cheese making a few months ago and have been waiting to use it. I used the sweet starter and it is fantastic! Hardly any tang at all. I mixed in some organic strawberry jam, mmmm -good! Then I had some strawberry, rhubarb crisp for desert and I poured the yogurt all over it. Soooo good! I am having a hard time trying to save some of it for starter to make the next batch. I will make it in the morning. I put boiling water in the thermos to warm it and I just heated the milk to the right temp in the microwave and and let it cool down to 110 while I watched TV. Then I added the starter and poured it in the thermos, put on the lid and let it set all night. It was not real thick but next time I will put some extra dry milk in it to make it thicker.

Just Darn Delicious!

I have a question. I just read this for the first time. I really want to try making all the different things, I'm excited to try the yogurt. I have a question. The cultures you use to make it. Miss Prissy I know you say to just use yogurt to make your own and not bother buying the powdered cultures. I take floragen which is basicaly a pill of cultures (1 pill is like eatting 12 cups of yogurt it says). It has over a billion cultures per pill (what it says on the packaging). Is that the type of thing you were saying to use if you don't use the organic yogurt from the store? Since I already have it in my house if its the right thing I might as well use it but I want to make sure thats what your talking about. Thanks for the help everyone!! I can't wait to start making my own.
