Homeschool Grow-Along

Well… I witnessed one rooster start crowing already (8 weeks). :hit The bottom one in the photo. And my husband said he witnessed the top one crowing (our poor son’s favorite). But it was kind of dark at the time. They still BOTH look like roosters right? Even in this photo you can tell they are out in front checking things out and their legs are huge.

Our son was devastated today when our friends took him. :hit

No matter how many times you tell them we can’t legally keep roosters, it doesn’t stop the heartbreak. 💔🥺

Awww I am so sorry for your poor son! I hope that he can bond with one of the pullets now and have a new favorite. I would agree that both of those do look like boys.

We have 4 more roosters and want to keep one.

We are trying to decide between these two silkies:

1. Darky is beautiful and seems to be healthy. He seems to have satin feathers instead of the silkie fluff. We bought him as a chick from a hatchery.

2. Cloudy is my favorite and was the first egg we hatched. He has silkie fluff feathers. But his head sways a lot since he was a chick and seems to either be a nutritional deficiency or genetic defect. Not sure.

This is what our flock looks like for potential progeny minus the X roosters.

Two Easter eggers (one frizzle), two brown silkies, and two random breeds.

Which roo would you keep? :hit

Honestly I would be sentimental and choose Cloudy. Plus he’s so pretty!

A born-and-raised home roo, just because of the bond, I would’ve kept close to me and close to my heart.

Ok I decided to keep Cloudy (the white one). 🥰 Hopefully we can get the head swaying figured out. I’m trying Save-a-Chick powder water right now. 🙏
I probably would do the same, just because it seems like more potential for fun colored chicks! I would try treating for wry neck.. I think it’s vitamin B2 (not B12) and vitamin E?
