I just started home schooling my 12 yr old daughter in Oct. so am still learning myself. I too was overwhelmed with all the information out there but chose to go with the 4 basic subjects (math, language arts, history & science) from one curriculum source. It is a trial and error in that dept. to find something that works for you though so don't get discouraged... There really are a LOT of great curriculums out there. I'm in Texas where the laws are not as invasive from what you are describing so I can't tell you about how to withdraw. I had a little bit of a problem with the school here with harrassing phone calls for about 7-10 days before they finally left me alone about truancy even though I followed our laws of what I needed to file. I was not willing to go to the school in person and/or tell them too much of my business (as far as where she would be going next....felt it was none of their business) so don't know what your laws are. As far as socialization though...she is actually much more social now than she was able to be in public school. We pulled her for several reasons but a huge part of our decision was based on her attitude and the stress public school was putting on her as far as homework load (she has a learning delay and she is receiving services) but just from that her self esteem was suffering and with the amount of daily homework it really affected any social life since she didn't have time. Now she is much more relaxed, can go at her own pace and enjoys learning because we have more freedom to dig into things that interest her (within reason of following an age appropriate curriculum). You may be able to find a home school group in your area for socialization. We found one in our area and have been attending once a week. There are kids of all ages, grouped into classes (k-3, 4-6, and high school) and every semester offer a variety of classes to choose from. Some of which are dance/cheer, healthy eating/cooking, photography, history based writing class, study of the planets, PE....things like that.) Her classes have been about 10 kids each and she's really enjoying meeting new friends in an atmosphere that is more fun and less competitive. We also do regular field trips thoughout the year so many opportunites for learning outside of the classroom. Many cities have special events for homeschoolers (field trips) and many bookstores offer discounts for books and curriculum for homeschoolers. So far we are really enjoying it (It was really something I never thought I'd do) and now I am so glad we did it. I would recommend pulling yours ASAP if the problems are that severe...take a week or 2 to "de-school" (take a short break) then begin having fun letting your child learn in a safe, comfortable environment. You will see a HUGE difference in your child....for the better.
