We got into the Bresse breed last year.

Ended up with only 4 hens & kept 1 of the roosters that seemed best.

Fast forward to this year.
The rooster has become an aggressive jerk; for no reason. Husband is the only one who can get him. I can enter the pen but I need a stick. Today he attacked me through the fence.

The hens are some of the most flighty/fearful and we never have hurt them. They scream like murder is happening when we grab them to move their tractor. No matter how calmly we do it.

They’re offspring are just as bad. K2 is 14wks old, strong as can be & screams like a hawk is getting him when you go to move him. Same with his younger brothers. His sister is typical of their mothers.
The last batch has been the best w being calm.

But what is really starting to get frustrating, they’re horrible layers!!
Most days I get 1 egg, maybe 2. Instead of 3-4/day.
I understand they will take breaks but not like that. Especially for the amount they eat.

Is this typical of the breed?

I’m fed up w them honestly in this area.
Is there a way to calm them down?

I may not have an exact answer,, but will offer some thoughts.
When chickens encounter much inbreeding, they may develop unfavorable traits.
If you want to stay with the Breese as your flock of choice,,, I suggest you get ether chicks, or eggs from 2 different sources.
Its OK to breed Rooster to offspring's. But it is not recommended to breed 2 offspring's from same gene pool.
Use leg bands to track your breeding pairs, and keep notes/information.

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and :highfive:

I have zip ties as markers.
I use Flockstar as my management tool. So doing that already.

Yeah so it’s dad to daughter; mother to son but never bro to sister correct??
