Homeschooling when in Transition!!

Hello Everyone,

I am new, I just introduce myself in introductions. I have a dilemma and thought maybe some of you would have some words of wisdom.

My husband is in the process of getting out of the military after 14 years of service. He has been hired in Commerce City, Colorado. We live in San Diego, Ca right now. OK, so he will be doing about 5 months of training starting in May probably. So, my kids have been going to a awesome Charter school. Its an accelerated program.

I plan to homeschool them while we stay with family in MO and my husband does his training before we get relocated in Colorado. I was planning to do the K-12 virtual school. Well, when I went to look into it, MO doesn't have the public school option. I have look at private school homeschool options and there is nothing that fits close to our budget with 4 kids.
Now, if homeschool works well, I am open to the idea to make it permanent thing. I just don't know what options i have when you are on a tight budget. For the the few months of training we are taking a HUGE pay cut, so money will be tight.

Any insight or suggestions are welcome.

I don't know what to tell you, but I hope you can find something that works well for you, your family, and your budget.

Maybe check into used supplies, also online and through home school groups.

Look in your area for a homeschool co-op group. Some are secular, some are religious. In my area, there are several, where all the parents participate in teaching or organizing or whatever needs done, depending on your knowledge, experience and specialties. Good luck with this time, and in Colorado!

Definitely look into the co-op, possibly a church nearby?
I tried the K12 program that was offered free through our public school system here in SC...and quit. The curriculum was fantastic, the public school system mandating 6 hours a day, etc was not. It honestly turned into 8-10 hours a day for us, if we were completely honest about it. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. Just my two cents. Curriculum is expensive if purchased new, def go with used if possible, best of luck!

I will definitely look into the used curriculums. Thank you all so much. This is all new to me and I am just trying to do what is best for my kiddos.

There are at least two types of homeschooling. The first is school at home, and the second is un-schooling. I homeschooled both of my kids through 2 years of Community College each. The State of Washington pays for 2 years of CC, for in state kids. So we made it. We did the un-school method. I provided the kids with all the things that they could need to be able to learn with, and it was up to them to learn.

Un-schooling works best with few electronic distractions around. There were times when I was sure the kids weren't learning anything, but they must have learned something. DD now has a BS in Technical Communications, and DS has been working for a County Road Maintenance since he was 16. The kids know how to learn, and how to work.

There are many ways to give your children an education. I found most things can be learned for next to nothing, but for a little work on a child's part.

Thank so much for all the suggestions. I have looked at some of the websites and stuff. I found Time4Learning, which seems to work for us, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with it?
