The Au Sable River valley (Grayling to Mio) in northern lower Michigan is actually colder, on average, than much of the U.P. Yet, the birds do just fine. Any of the large fowl breeds, like Rocks (any variety) the Wyandottes, Orpington, and so forth do just fine. We've got Rhode Island Reds, Rocks, etc, and they are all pretty hardy. After all, they were bred in New England and Upstate New York originally, and they've been kept in Michigan now for a couple hundred years.
Send me a Private Message if I can help in any way. We'll have the first batch of chicks come out of the brooder in just a few weeks.
