homesteading chickens in MICHIGAN

[Fred's Hens]

The Au Sable River valley (Grayling to Mio) in northern lower Michigan is actually colder, on average, than much of the U.P. Yet, the birds do just fine. Any of the large fowl breeds, like Rocks (any variety) the Wyandottes, Orpington, and so forth do just fine. We've got Rhode Island Reds, Rocks, etc, and they are all pretty hardy. After all, they were bred in New England and Upstate New York originally, and they've been kept in Michigan now for a couple hundred years.

thanks for the welcome , I will be having only a few chickens to start with, I will be keeping my chickens in a pen, our village ordinance says they can not be loose ( free range ) , but Im wondering how my male CHOC, LAB ( named FRIDAY ) will react to them , like digging a hole under the fence trying to get to them,
