Hello!
I have been lurking on this site for awhile making an idea book for my chicken dreams on Pinterest while we were searching for property. Well, we were lucky enough to find and close on our new ranch 2 weeks ago. 11 acres with a 7-year overgrown pasture and a house that hasn't been updated since 1975. The good news is the horse pasture is already fenced once we clear it, and there are a lot of outbuildings on the property.
The bad news is that there are Predators galore, including a large pack of coyotes, as well as my own 6 large breed dogs. So, my mind has been spinning on how to build up and proof the new coop and run. I will definitely be adding hot wire, but am working on the layout.
The coop is going to be built inside an old horse run-in shed, and I am really excited to finally know where I get to keep my chickens! I have never owned my own, but have helped out some friends who have 30-40 free range layers, and we have been spoiled by dozens of free fresh eggs the last couple years! I can't wait until they are from my own chickens!
Now that I am getting serious about building the coop and run I thought it was time to join BYC for some expert help and guidance along the way.
Pictures are of the shed that is gonna need some serious conversion, but at least it has a good roof! We are planning on starting with 5-10 chicks sometime in May, but our friends may raise them for a bit if I don't have the Chicken Palace made for them yet. We would eventually like to keep a flock of 15-20 depending on how things are going, so I am trying to plan a place for 20-25, lol.
