Honey Bee Homestead

Big news on the homestead, this little cutie was born!

Her name is Dolly, and she was born on Monday, the 21st, around 7 pm. Both mom(Lizzie) and baby did super well and are doing great. She is the cutest and sassiest little donkey and already thinks she owns the place.
The new chicks will be 4 weeks old on Monday! This isn't the best picture, but I like that you can see the different colors in her wing here. I'm so excited to see how they look once they mature!

I may or may not have bought a new incubator and put 22 eggs in it yesterday. I already have a styrofoam incubator that works well, but is a huge pain to clean. I plan to use this Nurture Right 360 mostly for lockdown, and my old incubator for the first 18 days. That way, I can do staggered hatches as well! But I wanted to do a full test run before I put any expensive eggs into it, so these are just mixed breeds from my egg-laying flock.

I moved the quail outside into their quail tractor! They seem to be happy so far. I still need to put a proper roof on it, but I needed to get them out so that I could move the chicks into their old pen. I need to build two more quail tractors as I plan to spiral breed, so I will do that and move my current quail into those while I finish the first tractor.

The ladies in the main flock did a great job today, 39 in total, but 3 were cracked, so we got an even 3 dozen!

Today I ordered another 26 RIR pullet chicks that will be coming in June. They are a production strain, so they won't be used in my breeding program but will go into the laying flock! I'm also tempted to get some more Easter Eggers as we don't have very many blue egg layers currently, but I haven't made the plunge yet. So we'll see.
I might have a chicken problem... 😂

Love you're story! Can't wait to see what else you share about your beautiful homestead! I've also been bitten by the chicken bug, I currently am raising my first ones and already planning on maybe adding just two more once the ones I have start laying! Lol!
Thank you! And be careful, "just two more" might turn into 5, or 20! 😂

I said last time that I had a chicken problem, and well, I have a duck problem too. I was pretty adamant this year that I would NOT be raising any more ducks, I even walked out of Tractor Supply without them, more than once. The truth is, I don't like raising ducklings. They make a HUGE MESS. Every. Single. Day. If only they weren't so darn cute.
Well anyway, a family friend asked me if I wanted her ducklings today. She had them in her bathroom and quickly realized how messy they were. So, of course, I said yes. Why did I say yes, you ask?
1. They were free
2. I love ducklings, and they're cute
3. What sane person would say no to free ducklings?

I might regret this in approximately one week, but for now I'm just enjoying how cute they are... 😂

With the name HoneyBeeHomestead and the amazing field full of dandelions in your first photo, you should have a couple bee hives! Good luck with your projects, looks great.
Thank you! I'd love to have some beehives. Someone gave me a hive and all the supplies, and I have it all sitting in the barn. But I'm honestly quite scared of bees and have been avoiding making the jump to get them! One of these days, I'll make myself do it and get over my fear! 😂

So, a little update on the 22 eggs I set almost 3 weeks ago now... there are only 6 left.
I wasn't expecting to have a great hatch rate with these eggs because they were from our egg-laying flock that has 60 hens and only 5 roosters. I knew that the fertilization wouldn't be great, and over half of them were unfertilized. I then had a few quit early on, and 2 more quit by day 14. So I'm now left with 6, all of which seem to be doing well. They went into lockdown last night, and for the first time, I am trying a semi-dry hatch. I have done dry incubations before, but would always bring the humidity up to 65-70% during lockdown. This time around, I did a mostly dry incubation, only adding water a few times when the humidity got below 20%. For hatching, I have brought the humidity up a bit, and my goal is to keep it around 40-50%. In the past, I always had a ton of eggs that made it to lockdown just fine, but failed to hatch. So, we'll see if a dry hatch helps!
Today is day 19, so I should have a few babies in the next couple of days!

I also fired up my old hova bator, and I got a new Govee thermometer/hygrometer that hooks up to my phone. I put it inside the incubator and was surprised by how steady the temperature stays. Since I had an empty running incubator, I had to fill it with something. So I ordered a bunch of eggs off of eBay.
Two dozen RIR (one doz. rose comb and one doz. single comb)
One dozen Salmon Faverolle
One dozen purebred assorted breeds (just for fun)
I received my rose comb RIR, SF's, and assorted breeds in the mail today. I was very happy to find that they were all packed very well and none of them were cracked. For the assorted breeds, I received Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex, Cuckoo Marans, and Sicilian Buttercup. I was sent 14 RIR, 17 SF, 6 BLRW, 4 SS, 4 CM, and 5 SB. I still have one dozen more RIR coming, and I'm wondering how I'm going to fit them in my incubator!
After letting them rest for a while, I set them in my incubator. I won't be turning them for the first 3 days, so that the air sacs will hopefully reattach. The next three weeks are going to be long! I'm super excited and hope that I can get a decent hatch rate!
