So the other day after eating grains and not realizing they were out of water, one of my chickens started making this honking noise and chalked it up as something being stuck in her throat. I massaged her crop and used oil to help loosen up anything. Now she has this gurgling noise. She is acting fine and normal just stops like she has something I'm her throat. No other chickens have any symptoms but we isolated her this morning as a precaution and are stumped as to what to do next. I'm going to reach out to the breeder we got her from but does anyone have any ideas? I didn't think it was respiratory in nature bc I witnessed its start, like she choked on grains, but worried it escalated into a respiratory infection. And are ALL respiratory infections contagious to the other ladies as well? Thanks in advance

If you can upload a video of what she is doing to YouTube or a similar platform, that may be helpful. Giving oil can get into the lungs, and massaging the crop can force food back up into the airway, which could cause choking. How long had she been out of water? That might lead to a crop impaction, and chickens will sometimes move their necks in a circular motion when something is stuck. Hopefully, this problem will resolve soon. If you suspect a respiratory infection, look for mucus from the nostrils or beak, bubbles in either eye, sneezing, gasping, etc.

I will try when I get home. I refilled their water same day, it was only a few hours so just figured it was bc her throat was dry. I tried being as gentle as possible and this morning we were lightly rubbing right below her beak on her throat which is where she seemed to be relieved. Eating exacerbates her noises. She has nothing coming from her eyes, nose or beak. No sneezing or gasping. When she makes the honking noise she is outstretched her neck and shakes her head a bit but I have seen a chicken sneeze a different so I don't think it's that. It's more like she's trying to clear her throat
