hi i am new to chickens and joined this group to find out how best to look after them. i have eight bantoms three cocks and five hens. They have all been hatched together and get on really well. so well they stay tight together. they are 20+ weeks old now. i was wondering when they would start to lay eggs and how they would do this when they huddle together all the time. At night they huddle together in one big clump. any suggestions would be greatly recieved

Hellooooo crafty caz my name is gary nice to meet u!

Hi and welcome to BYC.

Signs of impending laying include checking out the nest boxes and (possibly) submissive squatting. The will lay when they are good and ready. You may wish to consider either getting rid of one of the cock birds or keeping them separate from the pullets to prevent over-mating. The general cock bird to pullet/hen ratio is 1:10

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Chickens usually start to lay at 18 weeks, but some start earlier or later. My bantam (who is a Dutch) started laying way later than my others. My others began laying at around twenty weeks, then another two weeks went by, I went on vacation for two weeks, I came back and the chicken sitters had only gotten around four eggs. Took her about a month to lay after the others had started! You'll get your eggs soon!

:welcome

As the other greeters have said, they lay pretty much when they are darned good & ready, lol. My chickens are all the same age...4 of my 5 started laying around 20 weeks but the 5th one is a slow to mature girl and may not start until she's between 6 mos. and a year.

Be patient and enjoy them. Thanks for joining us!
