Hope this is a deterent for any raccoons....

Jake did a good job last night!

We live in the woods and have lots of racoons although I have never seen any in our fenced backyard. I believe that is due to Jake being back there. That being said....we've never had any chickens in the backyard either. Hopefully the coop will hold when something tries to get in. All the openings have hardware cloth on them. We are using a dog kennel on cement for the run. There is hardware cloth 3-4 feet up the sides, 6 inch boards at the base, chain link and tin on the roof. We still have to put the sand in run.
I'm glad you guys enjoyed my "live trap" Jake!

a coon dog is a good deterent!! I have two penned next to my coop and have not had a problem!! I think they know to stay away, even though i'll see them in the trees behing the house (within 20-30 feet of the coop) they havn't ventured in the yard to get the chickens. if everyone had a good coon dog on patrol this forum would have alot less post!!!

When I was younger we had a German Shepherd/Akita cross. His whole thing was that if he couldn't have the chickens no one could (well except his humans.) We never lost a chicken when he was guarding them.

Your dog is going to do a fine job guarding your chickens.
