Hi!
I wanted to introduce myself. I live in a small town about an hour west of Houston. We are in a deed-restricted neighborhood and have 1.3 acres.
There are five sections in our neighborhood. Currently, only 2 sections allow homeowners to have a small number of hens, and no roosters. Unfortunately, we don’t live in either of those sections. I’m told it will take a majority vote of landowners in our section, but there is a wealthy gentleman who owns most of the land and the golf course in our section, so in short, there is not much hope.
But I hear that the Texas Senate recently passed bill 1620, stating that HOAs cannot prohibit homeowners from having backyard chickens. They CAN impose some restrictions (number, no roosters, how far they must be from other residences), and I’m fine with that; our deed restrictions already have similar restrictions.
The bill still needs to go to the House of Representatives. I have no idea when that will be, but I hope it will pass! Just in case, I’m starting to research options; breeds, care and feeding, coops, etc.
Anyway, even if it doesn't pass, I wanted to join and see what I can learn about chicken ownership!
