Hopeful new chicken owner

I’m new to owning chickens too. 6 months now and I already have 18 chickens. they are awesome pets Good luck!
Wow 18 already. I fear my initial thoughts on number will increase when I go to pick them. Thanks for the good luck wishes.
Hope your flock are doing well and keeping you all entertained.

Welcome! You've gotten a lot of good advice already, but here are a couple more things to think about:
-There is a HUGE demand for chickens right now. The feed stores and small farms near me are selling out in record time. You can call ahead to find out what days stores will get deliveries and small farms may or may not be willing to let you reserve ahead of time.
-If you are buying day-old chicks it is best to buy a few more than you plan on keeping, since some may be male (even if they are all supposed to be pullets!) and chicks sometimes just die. If you end up with more pullets than you want they are quite easy to sell to someone else.

So today while considering where to put our coop and run (very limited options). I was wanting to incorporate an old raised fish pond into the run but fill it with sand and use it as a dust bath. At the back of the pond is a small rockery with an acer tree(6 ft high) in the middle of it, I dont know if I should have it all in the run or not as I can't see if the tree is toxic to chickens. This old rockery would give them a good digging and scratching area if it's not possible to allow them out the run on any given day. Also will they kill the tree by damaging it?

The tree is not toxic to them. They may damage the tree is they can get to the roots by digging.
Will your run be covered? They will fly up into the tree and munch on it's leaves.

Yes I intend to have the run covered. I usually prune the tree to maintain its size to no bigger than it is in the pic.

Thanks to everyone who has posted help in here. Coop build is well underway and almost finished and lined up to pick up our chickens on Wednesday!

I'm putting equinola horse bedding down on the coop floor. Was wondering if poop boards would be a good idea or go with the deep litter method as seen with carolina coops.
Any advice for new owner getting POL chickens would be helpful.
Thanks
