Hoping buckeye not a rooster

Your girls will only miss him for a bit, but as long as you have more than three, (three or more is a flock) they will be fine.
If this little thing is crowing, (It is likely crowing, just squeaky baby crowing.) then there is no chance of it being female. Crowing, shiny roo tail feathers, big comb, I'm sorry.

I know this is a silly question but can a rooster be spayed? So they can’t make babies . Are they all mean?
You can castrate a rooster. It’s a difficult process but many people take it upon themselves to do it.
However, castration isn’t necessary to prevent chicks from hatching, just make sure if your hens go broody they don’t sit on any eggs.
Most are not mean.
I’ve owned Buckeyes for years and not one is mean.
However, yours may be different because he is a hatchery bird and was raised with pullets. I think most stigmas with roosters people have are caused because they were raised with pullets and don’t learn how to properly behave.
A way to prevent bad behavior is to ignore them and don’t get out of their way. Calmly walk past like they aren’t there. That makes you a different entity that they wouldn’t think to challenge.

This. This is how I treat all my roosters. Never had a bad one. I always let them know that I'm head honcho and there is NO funny business. If the boys tidbit me, they get chased.

@Wmaddox
Can you legally keep a rooster?
Do you have small children?

If the answers are yes, and then no, I would consider keeping a rooster. They are beautiful and protectors for your girls.

Treat them right and you'll have a respectful gentleman. Not all roosters are mean.

Yes, you CAN caponize a rooster, but you'd have to find someone who could do it, like a vet. THIS IS NOT A DIY THING.
The eggs won't taste different.

It takes TWO things for chicks to hatch. The egg to be fertilized, and for it to be incubated. It has to be incubated for 21 DAYS before there is a full grown chick in there. Collect eggs daily and you'll never have baby chicks.
