Hoping for advice and helpful info

Hello all. This certainly looks to be a place I need to spend a lot of time reading and soaking up as much info as I can. Our family is moving from Dallas to a beautiful little homestead on 2 acres in a great little community to the east of Dallas. One of the things we're most looking forward to is having chickens. We think six is a good number to have. This, however, is the only thing we've really decided. We know virtually nothing about chickens but are excited and eager to learn. Our 11-year old son is looking forward to naming them, too! We are animal lovers in general, and this move will allow us to enjoy more than the dog (Belle) and cat (Samantha) who currently allow us to share their home. Thanks in advance for all the tips, hints, advice and help I'll be picking up from this community and I look forward to meeting many new friends in the forums!
 
Welcome to BYC, ElkIII. We (my family) lived in Rowlett until it became so crowded I couldn't swing a cat without hitting a neighbor. Once upon a time Rowlett had much less strenuous codes regarding chickens, rabbits, horses, and even goats. Things change and as Rowlett became a "bedroom community" for Dallas, we began looking into getting back out into the country.

I retired a couple of years ago and we bought a rather neglected (run down sounds so bad doesn't it?) 30 acres from a gentleman who could no longer keep up with it. Now my son and his family has moved out here and lives at the north end of our property. We're enjoying country living. We live in Kaufman County in a little community named Styx (pronounced Stikes, not Sticks). Apart from the occasional boat ride almost nobody visits out here. We are about 9 or 10 miles from the Post Office in Kemp.

Anyway, there were some chicken "facilities" on the property -- much neglected, but structurally sound -- and I've been fixing them up as I build a flock. We started with 24 red stars back in February. I've moved all of my girls out of the brooder and into the coop in the past 10 days or so.

Getting long-winded, but I wanted to let you know there are some other Texans on here. Your family is welcome to come out this way and visit with us anytime. I've learned a lot just hanging on BYC even though I don't post much. I also just started a blog and the URL is in my sig below. Would love for you to stop by there as well.

BalloonJuice, We will be at the opposite end of Kaufman County from you, lol. Just inside the county line, our mailing address says Forney, but we're outside the city limits.

We don't want too large of a flock. I'll start getting names confused if we get more than 6-8. But that should be enough to satisfy our egg habit. there are tentative plans for an additional dog and/or cat, maybe a few goats, a cow, possibly a pig, and maybe even a llama!
