Hello everyone! Yep, I'm a new chicken mama. In fact, I now own 10 of the most adorable chicks ever (yes, I've fallen for them)! I spent 5 weeks building an awesome coop and preparing for their arrival. We went to a local farm on Monday and picked up 8 of our new babies. I noticed on the ride home that the one that "picked" my daughter was making a sneezing noise. The next 12 hours it ate and drank, but seemed lethargic and wouldn't open it's eyes very much. It kept sneezing and had some discharge from it's nose and it's face seemed a little swollen. I called the farmer and he had me bring her back, but wouldn't say he thought she was sick. I also took one other chick back too that did sneeze a few times. That night my husband and oldest (9 yr) started throwing up and having diarrhea. My husband immediately said it was salmonella from the chicks. I argued it had to be food poisoning from the pizza. They recovered within 24 hours and now I'm sick. Please, tell me I don't have to get rid of our chicks. We have a 2 year old that is fine now, but had open heart surgery when she was 4 days old and my husband is really scared she might get sick. If it is salmonella, how or can I treat my chicks to get rid of it? Or are we out of luck? Please help! I really love those birds!

! Great to have you with us! Sorry to hear about your chicken and human illnesses. It doesn't seem likely you would have contracted it from your chicks but I'm certainly not the person to ask. Hope you get it isolated! Good luck to you!

:welcome   I don't those are the symptoms of salmonella.  Is it possible your family is allergic to chickens(feathers)?

Vomiting, diarrhea, fever are all symptoms of salmonella. That's what we have. All the chicks I have now seem fine. It was just that one I returned that looked awful. Hoping we get over this and the baby doesn't get it and my chicks stay healthy!

I ordered some oxine and actually talked to the manufacturer and I'm feeling better about things and feeling better from my illness. Thanks for the support!
